Outdoor vs Indoor Training
ByIn the area of firearms training, professional instructors are always looking for more ways to improve our training programs. One of the most important features of a training program is how realistic it is to the student and how much of the training can be used in a real life situation. This is the primary reason we choose to do most of our advanced tactical training outdoors.
When used properly, outdoor training comes close to realistic situations and obstacles that one may encounter in a gunfight. This allows us to have a 180 degree firing platform, use movement, cover and concealment, multiple target engagement, malfunction clearing, threat assessment, and much more. Training does not necessarily mean
standing in one place and shooting a good group. Yes, you must make the hits, however you must have the capability to think and move on your feet, then you will react in a situation with much more focus, options and confidence. Problem issues include backstop limitations, temperature, wind, rain, dust, etc.
When it comes to Indoor Ranges, we as Instructors can control the situational training better and have a more specific ability on advanced judgmental and shoot/don’t shoot training. Day or night can be adjusted in a flick of a switch as well as internal audio control. Problems include, limited movement capabilities.
As a whole, training can be done at a good outdoor range as well as indoor facility. The degree of training changes on pros and cons for both of them. Yes, indoor ranges have their specific benefits and advantages, however there’s great options you have with movement in outdoor training. In my opinion the benefits of outdoor training should be used in conjunction with indoor platform shooting and tactics.
Your odds of survival are much better if you have trained utilizing all of the benefits of indoor and outdoor training. Experience a Maricopa Tactical training class and challenge yourself to be tactically versatile.
